Trauma Therapy for Women near Punta Gorda, Florida
You Don’t Need to “Just Get Over It.”
And you do not have to explain it, minimize it, or find the right words for it first. I already know what it costs to carry something you’ve never said out loud. And I know how to help you put it down.
Trauma therapy is a type of therapy that helps your brain and body finish processing something traumatic that happened to you in the past, so it stops affecting you in the present.
Here's the plain version: when something scary, life threatening , painful, or overwhelming happens (a single event like an accident, or something ongoing like growing up with a parent who was unpredictable), your brain is supposed to file it away as "that happened, it's over now." And most of the time it does that on its own. But there are times the memory doesn't get filed away properly. It stays "active," which results in your brain thinking it's still happening or could happen again any second.
That's why someone can logically know they're safe right now, but still feel anxious, jumpy, shut down, or on edge for no obvious reason. The event is over, but the alarm system never turned off.
Regular talk therapy helps you understand why you feel that way. Trauma therapy goes a step further to the root and helps your brain finish processing the memory, so the alarm finally gets turned off.
This is how you don’t just understand your triggers, you actually stop getting triggered as much or in the same way.
What Is Trauma Therapy, And How Is It Different Here?
Signs You Might Benefit From Trauma Therapy
Trauma doesn't always look like a single catastrophic event. And it doesn't have to be dramatic to be real. Sometimes it just looks like chronic tension, never resting, or feeling responsible for everyone and everything.
Have done therapy before, but something deeper still hasn't moved
Understand your patterns intellectually and still can't stop them
Deal with physical symptoms (chronic tension, gut issues, sleep problems) your doctor's chalked up to "stress"
Over-function at work, at home, in every relationship, while running on empty
Are done managing symptoms and want to get to the actual root
Feel stuck even when life looks stable from the outside
Experience anxiety, shutdown, or overwhelm that won't fully resolve
Notice the same relationship pattern playing out again and again
Carry childhood trauma, emotional neglect, or grew up in an unpredictable home
Are the "strong one" everyone leans on, and you're exhausted by it
How Trauma Lives in the Body (Not Just the Mind)
The thing I hear more than almost anything else: "I know all of this. I just can't seem to change it."
That's what happens when trauma is stored somatically, in your body and nervous system, not just in your conscious thought. You can understand your childhood, name your patterns, know exactly why you react the way you do, and still react that way anyway. Because the part of your brain running the show isn't the thinking brain. It's the survival brain. And it doesn't update just because you had a good insight in a session.
Trauma in the body can look like:
A nervous system that never fully settles, even when you're objectively safe
Emotional reactions that feel way bigger than the moment calls for
Physical bracing, tension, or a low-grade sense of dread that never fully lifts
Shutting down or going numb when things get heavy
Not being able to rest without guilt or anxiety creeping in
Hypervigilance in relationships, always scanning for what's about to go wrong
Trauma therapy that actually works has to meet you where trauma actually lives: the nervous system, the body, the stored memories still firing like the threat is happening right now. That's what EMDR is built to do, whether we're doing it in weekly sessions or an Intensive.
Who Trauma Therapy at Untamed Therapy Is For
Most women who reach out aren't in crisis. Their lives look stable, successful, responsible. They're usually the person everyone else depends on. But underneath that functioning, something's still stuck. Old patterns keep resurfacing. Anxiety doesn't fully settle. Relationships keep replaying the same dynamic. There's a constant sense of pushing through your life instead of actually living it.

The Hyper-Independent Woman
You built your whole identity around not needing anyone. You handle everything. You show up for everybody. And you're quietly, privately exhausted in a way you've never let anyone fully see. That hyper-independence isn't a personality trait. It's a trauma response. It deserves to be treated like one.
-
The High-Functioning Woman Who's "Fine" on the Outside
Your life looks good on paper. Your coping skills are excellent. You've done the therapy, read the books, filled the journals. And something underneath still hasn't shifted. That gap between insight and actual change is exactly what EMDR is built to close.

The Woman Who's Done Just Surviving
You've been managing your symptoms for years, and you're good at it. But managing isn't healing, and some part of you already knows that. If you're ready to stop circling the same pain and actually move through it, this is where that happens.

The Woman Carrying Childhood Trauma or Emotional Neglect
Maybe nothing "dramatic" happened. Maybe it was just a childhood where your needs weren't consistently met, where love felt conditional, where you learned early to take care of everyone else first. That's still trauma. It still lives in the body. And it still runs your adult patterns until it actually gets processed.
Your Trauma Therapist near Punta Gorda
I'm Jessica Brooks, a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and EMDR-Certified Trauma Therapist. I founded Untamed Therapy & Consulting in Cape Coral, FL, to provide the kind of trauma therapy I spent a long time looking for myself.
My clinical training includes advanced EMDR certification through EMDRIA, plus training in CBT, DBT, somatic approaches, IFS (Internal Family Systems), parts work, inner child work, and nervous system-based therapies. The credentials matter. They're just not the whole story.
I've also sat in the client chair. I know what it's like to be the hyper-independent woman who has it together on the outside and is quietly unraveling underneath. I know what it's like to do the EMDR work that cracks everything open, and what's waiting for you on the other side of it.
That lived experience is why I show up the way I do: present, direct yet compassionate AF, genuinely invested, and completely done with the sugarcoated therapy-speak that wastes your time. I won't nod politely while you spin your wheels. I also won't ever shame you for the patterns you built to survive.
Think less "clinical robot," more "trauma-trained ride-or-die with a therapy license."
If you want soft-spoken and neutral, I'm probably not your therapist. If you want someone who keeps it real, brings the science and the fire, and won't let you stay stuck, we're going to get along just fine.

About Trauma Therapy
-
Childhood trauma and emotional neglect, relational trauma and betrayal, PTSD, complex PTSD, anxiety rooted in past experience, burnout from chronic over-functioning, attachment wounds, and the long-term effects of growing up in an unstable or emotionally unavailable environment. Trauma doesn't have to be one dramatic event to count. If it's still running your nervous system and your daily life, it's worth treating.
-
No. Plenty of clients come in with anxiety, burnout, relationship patterns, or a general sense of being stuck, not a formal trauma diagnosis. If unresolved experiences are affecting your nervous system and your current life, EMDR can help regardless of what it's labeled.
-
You don't need clear memories to benefit from EMDR. The work targets patterns, triggers, and emotional reactions, the way trauma actually lives in your nervous system, not just specific recalled events. A lot of clients with emotional neglect or a chaotic upbringing don't have "stories" in the traditional sense, and EMDR is still highly effective for them.

Weekly sessions run on a standard cadence and work well for ongoing, steady processing. Intensives compress that work into extended, focused blocks of time, which can move things faster for women who've already built a lot of insight and just need the uninterrupted space to finish processing. Neither is more "serious" than the other. We'll figure out which fits during your consultation. Or learn more here

Probably, yes.
Here's why: most talk therapy works with the thinking brain, insight, narrative, coping strategies. EMDR works at the neurological level, directly with how memories get stored in the brain and body.
Clients who've done years of traditional therapy often find EMDR moves things that talking, while helpful, never could. The self-awareness you already built in previous therapy can make EMDR even more effective, not less.
